A first in Quebec: a plant adapted to manufacture stainless steel​<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On November 23, the consortium Signature on the Saint Lawrence awarded the coveted contract for the new Champlain bridge to Acier AGF. This contract represents a significant tonnage of black, galvanized and stainless steel rebar, about 16,000 metric tons. <\/p>\n

Acier ATR, our Trois-Rivières plant, was assigned the production of more than 4,000 metric tons of stainless steel rebar. To do so, an existing portion of the plant was renovated, new manufacturing equipment was installed and local expertise was called upon to meet the standards required for using this product, a first in Quebec. <\/p>\n

The Trois-Rivières plant had to make adaptations to avoid ferrous contamination by black steel, which reduces the product’s efficacy and shortens the life span of projects. <\/p>\n

Stainless steel rebar: the solution for durability ​<\/strong><\/p>\n

The new bridge will have a lifespan of 125 years. While it is more expensive than galvanized steel, stainless steel rebar must be used in areas with the highest exposure to road salt to ensure the durability of the concrete. With twice the lifespan of galvanized steel, stainless steel is impervious to corrosion or rust.<\/p>\n

Primicia en Quebec: una fábrica adaptada para la fabricación de acero <\/strong><\/h2>\n

El pasado 23 de noviembre, el consorcio Signature sobre el San Lorenzo, le atribuyó el prestigioso contrato del nuevo puente Champlain a Acier AGF. Este contrato representa un volumen importante de refuerzos de acero negro, galvanizado e inoxidable, una cantidad de aproximadamente 16 000 toneladas métricas.<\/p>\n

La fabricación de refuerzos de acero inoxidable, que representa más de 4000 toneladas métricas, ha sido confiada a Acier ATR, nuestra fábrica en Trois-Rivières. Para hacerlo, una parte ya existente de la fábrica ha sido renovada, se han instalado nuevos equipos de fabricación y se han aprovechado las competencias locales para responder a los estándares requeridos para la utilización de este producto; una primicia en Quebec.<\/p>\n

En efecto, la fábrica de Trois-Rivières tuvo que ser adaptada para evitar la contaminación ferrosa proveniente del acero negro, la cual disminuye la eficacia del producto y reduce la vida útil de los proyectos.<\/p>\n

Refuerzos de acero inoxidable: la solución para obras duraderas<\/strong><\/p>\n

La vida útil de un puente nuevo es de 125 años. Aunque es más costoso que el acero galvanizado, el uso de refuerzos de acero inoxidable en el concreto en los lugares más expuestos a las sales fundentes era necesario para garantizar la durabilidad del concreto. Al tener una vida útil dos veces más larga que la del acero galvanizado, el acero inoxidable no es sensible a la corrosión y no se degrada en óxido.<\/p>\n
