On a grey November morning, sitting in front of my computer, between two coffees, I was trying to find a good reason to keep procrastinating and above all forget about the approaching mid-terms. I casually browsed job search sites. Having just completed a summer internship, I now had too much time on my hands to reflect on how my savings have dwindled so quickly in only three months. It’s not our fault that we only get four months of good weather in Quebec! It was time to get real, because the landlord wouldn’t be cutting me any slack. I spotted a posting for a university student to intern in communications at a construction company. At first glance, I thought, what sort of communications would I be doing at a construction company? I once helped a friend build a patio, but that was the extent of my construction expertise. My professional experience has always involved sports and I now felt I wanted to try something else. And I’ve always loved embarking on new adventures. So I applied and was called for an interview.<\/p>\n

A few weeks later, with the end of term looming, I realized I should have been focusing on my studies instead of wasting time on my computer. As I tried to study the reams of material that would be on the exams that were approaching too fast for my liking, the phone rang. A woman’s voice asked me if I was still interested in the internship at AGF because they liked meeting me in the interview and had retained my application. We chatted for a few minutes; she made a very good impression on me, and—to my surprise—seemed very enthusiastic about me joining her team. And so I accepted the position as an intern with AGF Group for the next eight months. I just resolved the problem of having too much time on my hands with a 40-hour workweek and four university courses. <\/p>\n

Once I arrived, I quickly got to know my team. I was especially touched by the warm welcome I received from the folks in the office. This is not my first work experience, and I can say that it’s not every organization that gives newcomers a tour of the office and introduces them to all the employees, in addition to meeting every department director and learning what their department is about. It’s much easier to work when we are acquainted with our resources.<\/p>\n

But while I’m starting to get an overall understanding of what everyone does at the company, I have realized to my dismay that not everyone has a clear idea of what AGF’s Communications Department does.<\/p>\n

Here are a few of the projects we have worked on since January.<\/p>\n

AGF Group’s corporate brochure and pamphlet<\/h3>\n

If you haven’t already read it, ask for a copy. The new corporate brochure features many of AGF’s major achievements, its history, values and experience, as well as its Foundation. It’s a great tool for promoting our services or providing information to those who are interested. Since you’re part of this brochure, why not take a look at it?<\/p>\n

The Network<\/h3>\n

Each month, you receive a newsletter with articles you have submitted. We edit the content and keep the platform updated. We are lucky at AGF to have an in-house newsletter that keeps us informed on everything going on at our many divisions and provides progress reports on the projects we are working on.<\/p>\n

Visual standards and catalogue of promotional items<\/h3>\n

A standardized visual identity is important to making our work appear more professional and more effective, in addition to enhancing the company’s image.<\/p>\n

Digital display<\/h3>\n

To keep you updated on AGF Group’s news and projects, we are currently working with the IT Department to design and install digital displays at some of our divisions. Screens will be installed at participating business units to display information about the company and upcoming activities.<\/p>\n

Foundation  <\/h3>\n

The Foundation is a large part of our work. Since philanthropy is something we have taken to heart at AGF, we make the AGF Group Foundation one of our leading priorities. And we are very pleased to see how many of you are participating. As we said in an earlier article, we recently did a study to compare AGF Group Foundation to other private foundations in Canada. We have yet to find another that uses the same model as ours, i.e. providing employees with a tool so they can organize fundraising activities and then distribute to the proceeds to the charity of their choice. It’s something to be proud of!<\/p>\n

When I think back to the job posting that read, “Are you looking for an enriching learning experience and working with a team that will appreciate your input?” I have to say I have not been disappointed.<\/p>\n

Las comunicaciones en AGF<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Una mañana gris de noviembre, entre dos cafés, sentado frente a mi computadora, tratando de encontrar una buena razón para seguir procrastinando y sobre todo olvidar la mitad de la sesión universitaria que se acercaba, empecé a examinar tranquilamente los sitios de búsqueda de empleo. Yo que acababa de terminar una pasantía durante el verano, me encontraba con demasiado tiempo para reflexionar sobre la manera en la que mis ahorros habían desaparecido tan rápido en tres meses. ¡No es culpa nuestra si la temperatura es buena solamente cuatro veces al año en Quebec! En fin, era hora de volver a poner los pies sobre la tierra para hacer comunicaciones para una empresa de construcción. A primera vista, me pregunté si era una buena idea hacer comunicaciones en una empresa de construcción. Ya había ayudado a un amigo a construir su patio, pero mi experiencia en construcción terminaba ahí. Mis experiencias profesionales me habían siempre dirigido hacia el área deportiva, así que ahora tenía ganas de experimentar algo diferente. Además, siempre me ha encantado lanzarme en nuevas aventuras. ¡Así fue que presenté mi candidatura y pasé la entrevista!<\/p>\n

Algunas semanas más tarde, ya al final de la sesión, al darme cuenta de que probablemente debí concentrarme en mis estudios en vez de perder el tiempo en la computadora, intenté estudiar la multitud de temas que iban a estar incluidos en los exámenes que se acercaban demasiado rápido para mi gusto cuando el teléfono sonó. La mujer al otro lado de la línea me preguntó si todavía estaba interesado en la pasantía en AGF porque querían entrevistarme ya que habían conservado mi candidatura. Después de discutir algunos minutos con esta mujer que me causó una muy buena impresión y que, ciertamente me parecía muy entusiasta con la idea de reclutarme para trabajar en su equipo, decidí aceptar el puesto. Así que sería pasante en Grupo AGF por los siguientes ocho meses. A mí que me parecía que tenía demasiado tiempo personal, acababa de remediar la situación con un horario de cuarenta horas y cuatro cursos universitarios.<\/p>\n

Cuando llegué, me presentaron inmediatamente a mi equipo de trabajo. Lo que me marcó particularmente fue el cálido recibimiento de la gente en la oficina. No es mi primera experiencia laboral y puedo decir que el que los recién llegados recorran toda la oficina para conocer a todos los empleados no sucede en todas las organizaciones, además de ir a ver a cada director de departamento para que me explique en qué consiste su departamento. Es mucho más fácil trabajar cuando conocemos nuestros recursos.<\/p>\n

Por otra parte, incluso si empiezo globalmente a entender bien la contribución de cada uno en la empresa, me he dado cuenta, para mi desconcierto, que algunos no tienen una idea muy definida de lo que hace el departamento de comunicaciones en AGF.<\/p>\n

A continuación, le presento algunas de las tantas tareas en las que hemos trabajado desde enero.<\/p>\n

El folleto corporativo de Grupo AGF<\/h3>\n

Es una herramienta maravillosa para promover nuestros servicios o para darle información a los que estén interesados. Usted forma parte de este folleto, ¿no le parece que sería una tontería desaprovecharlo?<\/p>\n

La Red<\/h3>\n

Cada mes recibe un boletín informativo con los artículos que ustedes nos envían. Redactamos el contenido y mantenemos la plataforma al día para que sea óptima. En Grupo AGF tenemos la suerte de contar con un diario interno que nos permite mantenernos informados sobre lo que sucede en nuestras múltiples divisiones y sobre el avance de los proyectos sobre los que trabajamos.<\/p>\n

Normas visuales y catálogo de objetos promocionales<\/h3>\n

La estandarización de las normas visuales es un proyecto importante para que el trabajo corporativo sea más profesional y más eficaz además de realzar la imagen de la empresa.<\/p>\n

Exhibidores digitales<\/h3>\n

Para mantenerlo al día con las noticias y los proyectos de Grupo AGF estamos, junto con el departamento de informática, trabajando en la concepción y la implantación de exhibidores digitales en algunas de nuestras divisiones. Se instalarán televisiones en las unidades de negocios participantes para mostrar información sobre la empresa y sobre las próximas actividades.<\/p>\n

Fundación<\/h3>\n

La fundación es una gran parte de nuestro trabajo. Ya que la filantropía es un tema que significa mucho para AGF, le otorgamos un lugar destacado en nuestras prioridades a la Fundación Grupo AGF. Nos alegra mucho ver que tantos de ustedes participan. Como lo mencionamos en un artículo precedente, realizamos una investigación para comparar la Fundación Grupo AGF con las demás fundaciones privadas canadienses. Hasta el momento no hemos encontrado otra que utilice el mismo modelo que el nuestro, es decir funcionar como herramienta para que los empleados organicen entre ellos las actividades de recaudación de fondos para después distribuir el dinero recaudado entre los organismos de beneficencia de su elección. ¡Siéntase orgulloso! Finalmente, cuando recuerdo haber presentado mi candidatura para un puesto que decía: “¿Busca una oportunidad de aprendizaje enriquecedora y un equipo de trabajo en el que su apoyo será muy apreciado?”, bueno, no me equivoqué.<\/p>\n
