One of these is a project on the 5S method.

Contrary to what you might think, the 5S method goes well beyond good storage habits. In addresses the following points: Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize and Sustain.

1. Sort: A team sorts through all the tools, equipment and materials, etc. and asks the following question: “Do I need this to perform my daily tasks?” Items that are rarely or never used will be identified and placed farther away or disposed of. After determining which ones are really necessary, the workstation will be reorganized with these items close at hand.

(Photo: 5S project under way in the Armabec stock room, led by maintenance manager Marc Morin)

2. Set in Order: Organizing things so they are easier to use and identifying so everyone can find them, use them and then easily put them back in the proper place. Visual aids will be used.

3. Shine: The work area is tidied and cleaned at the end of each shift. One or more people must be assigned responsibility for cleaning and periodic cleaning methods must be established. The supervisor must ensure that a periodic inspection is done.

4. Standardize: In this step, we agree upon a formal framework for maintaining tidiness and ensuring that these practices become habit and part of the regular routine in the workplace.

5. Sustain: If the 5Ss are to work, it is essential to evaluate performance, and management must be committed to the method.

If you have any questions or suggestions for how to participate in implementing the 5S method in your department, contact the Innovation and Continuous Improvement Department at innovation@agfgroup.com.
