From now on, every month, AGF employees will be able to send me questions about the company&rsquo;s history, projects, social involvement, or any other subject related to the AGF Group. This month, I selected a question that was sent by Charles Chebl, Eng. &mdash;Senior Vice President, Operations:<\/p>\n<p><strong>AGF Group has experienced impressive growth over the last 20 years. What were the biggest challenges and what was your acquisition strategy?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is true that since its creation in 1948,&nbsp;AGF Group Inc. has experienced sustained growth. But life as an entrepreneur is not a long quiet river&hellip;<\/p>\n<p>In 1981, when my father asked me to join him in ensuring the company&rsquo;s future in the midst of the economic crisis, I took the greatest risk of my career. In 1982, 25 out of 1000 businesses declared bankruptcy in Quebec, whereas today, this rate is 4 times lower, i.e. 7 out of 1000 companies. Interest rates were close to 22% and the unemployment rate reached 16%.<\/p>\n<p>The economy quietly recovered and AGF took its place on the market, which allowed me to understand the importance of being resilient.<\/p>\n<p>In 1999, a first merger opportunity emerged, followed by significant development across Canada. From there, a 3-part strategy was adopted:<\/p>\n<p>&mdash;Acquisition of businesses;<\/p>\n<p>&mdash;Partnerships with other companies;<\/p>\n<p>&mdash;New business creations.<\/p>\n<p>The needs grew at the same rate as the company: it was necessary to make sure that the company&rsquo;s structure was reinforced at all levels.<\/p>\n<p>It was the Hibernia oil platform project, our first opportunity for geographic diversification, that propelled us to a higher level. Then, in 2005, a global project took shape with the possibility of acquiring a company in the Middle East. I quickly understood that risks taken at the international level were very different and much larger if only regarding the workforce. In the years that followed, other business opportunities came in Africa, South America, and the French West Indies. Today, we have more than 2,500 employees and nearly 45 operating units in 12 countries around the world!<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, after a strategic reflection and the desire to replicate the business model by offering the entire cycle of a product (design, manufacture and installation), I decided to invest in a new sector, Access. I had to relearn a new trade.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last 71 years, the company has met many challenges, including winning the trust of financial partners, supporting the recruitment of top talent, and ensuring succession and knowledge transfer. Let&rsquo;s bet that the next decades will be just as exciting!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/groupeagf.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Ligne_bleue_separation_version_e-2203.jpg\" style=\"height:67px; width:400px\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>La Red, edici&oacute;n de mayo de 2019<\/p>\n<p>Es con un gran placer que le presento una nueva secci&oacute;n de nuestro bolet&iacute;n informativo: &ldquo;Pregunta al Presidente&rdquo;. A partir de ahora, cada mes, los empleados de AGF podr&aacute;n enviarme sus preguntas sobre la historia, los proyectos, la implicaci&oacute;n social o cualquier otro tema relacionado con Grupo AGF. Este mes, escog&iacute; la pregunta de Charles Chebl, Vicepresidente Principal, Explotaci&oacute;n:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Durante las &uacute;ltimas dos d&eacute;cadas Grupo AGF logr&oacute; un crecimiento impresionante. &iquest;Cu&aacute;les fueron los desaf&iacute;os m&aacute;s importantes y cu&aacute;l fue su estrategia de adquisici&oacute;n?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Es verdad que desde su creaci&oacute;n en 1948, Grupo AGF inc. tuvo un fuerte crecimiento. Sin embargo, ser empresario no es un lecho de rosas&hellip;<\/p>\n<p>En 1981, cuando mi padre me pidi&oacute; que me uniera a &eacute;l para garantizar la perennidad de la empresa en medio de una crisis econ&oacute;mica, tom&eacute; el riesgo m&aacute;s grande de mi carrera. En 1982, 25 empresas entre 1000 se declararon en bancarrota en Quebec, mientras que hoy, esta tasa es cuatro veces menos elevada, es decir 7 empresas entre 1000. Las tasas de inter&eacute;s se acercaban al 22% y la tasa de desempleo al 16%.<\/p>\n<p>La econom&iacute;a se levant&oacute; tranquilamente y AGF tom&oacute; su lugar en el mercado, lo cual me permiti&oacute; entender la importancia de la resiliencia.<\/p>\n<p>En 1999, naci&oacute; una primera posibilidad de fusi&oacute;n, seguida de un importante desarrollo en Canad&aacute;. A partir de ah&iacute;, la estrategia adoptada se present&oacute; en tres facetas:<\/p>\n<p>adquisici&oacute;n de empresas,<\/p>\n<p>asociaciones con otras compa&ntilde;&iacute;as,<\/p>\n<p>creaciones de nuevas empresas.<\/p>\n<p>Las necesidades crecieron al mismo ritmo que la empresa; era necesario asegurarse de que la estructura se reforzara en todos los niveles.<\/p>\n<p>Es el proyecto de plataforma petrolera Hibernia, nuestra primera oportunidad de diversificaci&oacute;n geogr&aacute;fica, el que nos propuls&oacute; a un nivel superior. Despu&eacute;s, en el 2005, un proyecto de apertura al mundo tom&oacute; forma a su vez, con la posibilidad de adquirir una compa&ntilde;&iacute;a en Medio Oriente. Entend&iacute; r&aacute;pidamente que los riesgos eran muy diferentes internacionalmente y mucho m&aacute;s importantes, aunque solo fuera en cuanto a la mano de obra. En los a&ntilde;os que siguieron, se presentaron otras ocasiones de negocios en &Aacute;frica, en Sudam&eacute;rica y en las Antillas francesas. Es as&iacute; que hoy en d&iacute;a, &iexcl;contamos con m&aacute;s de 2500 empleados y casi 45 unidades que operan en 12 pa&iacute;ses a trav&eacute;s del mundo!<\/p>\n<p>En 2007, despu&eacute;s de una reflexi&oacute;n estrat&eacute;gica y con el deseo de replicar el modelo &ldquo;refuerzo&rdquo; ofreciendo todo el ciclo de un producto (concepci&oacute;n, fabricaci&oacute;n e instalaci&oacute;n), decid&iacute; invertir en un nuevo sector, Acceso.
