{"id":46180,"date":"2019-09-13T08:47:00","date_gmt":"2019-09-13T12:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/groupeagf.com\/en\/the-network\/uncategorized\/darlington-station"},"modified":"2024-05-07T15:37:14","modified_gmt":"2024-05-07T19:37:14","slug":"darlington-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/groupeagf.com\/en\/the-network\/projects\/darlington-station","title":{"rendered":"Darlington Station"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>AGF Access Group, Inc. has been selected to provide a modular access solution manufactured under its Winsafe brand for Canada&rsquo;s largest clean energy project: the Ontario Power Generation&rsquo;s (OPG) Darlington Nuclear Generating Station in Southern Ontario, a joint venture refurbishment project led by SNC-Lavalin Group, Inc. and Aecon Group, Inc.<br \/>\nPart of the Darlington Station refurbishment requires the removal and replacement of 960 feeder tubes within each of the reactors&rsquo; cores, with each tube weighing up to 600 pounds. In order to reach and replace the upper feeder tubes, the workers need safety and efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>Winsafe engineers created a new platform concept to meet the challenge of the constricted space and time constraints of the reactor core. They fabricated an extruded aluminum, lightweight, modular platform system that could quickly and easily be assembled by workers.<\/p>\n<p>We never say no to projects, but when we first looked at the details of the Darlington refurbishment, it was a challenging request. Although the access portion was just a small piece of the overall puzzle, the project had unusual needs and traditional access equipment was not going to be the answer.<\/p>\n<p>Historically for accessing this type of work, workers would weld steel platforms together while inside the reactor vault to make access feasible, and then later cut them out, but that approach was problematic in this environment with limited space and access. Within the reactor vault, the extremely constrained space left little room for workers in bulky protective equipment to efficiently build and remove a high-capacity work platform to access the four-sided matrix of feeder tubes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Keeping the workers safe was our primary consideration. We also needed to be sure to minimize exposure to the radiation dose as much as possible,&rdquo; said Emmanuel Piec,<br \/>\nGeneral Manager, Winsafe. &ldquo;We needed a design that would allow them to quickly put together the feeder platform without struggling with nuts and bolts in their protective gloves. By making the platform modular and almost completely tool-free, they could get it into place in the tight space quickly and safely.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The two platforms, each consisting of two independent rectangular halves measuring roughly 30 feet in length and 20 feet wide, provide access to the faces of the two-sided reactor. Each platform has a weight capacity of 5,000 lbs to support multiple workers and their tools while they maneuver and fit &ndash;up the tight and exacting tolerances for work with the heavy feeder tubes.<br \/>\nThe platform main structure, suspended from a series of fixed and relocatable steel rod hangers, needed to fit into an area that was only nine inches deep, including peak deflection at maximum load. The spans between platform hangers needed to be maximized, in order to minimize impeding movement of the long feeder tubes across the platform working surface. From the platform, the workers could remove and replace each of the tubes, using existing station mezzanines to get on and off the platform, and temporary step-up platforms as needed to reach the higher tubes. Feeder tubes and other materials were brought to the working area through a hoistway located between the two corresponding platform halves.<\/p>\n<p>The space constraints surrounding this job were extremely challenging, but we came up with a solution which worked, and worked well. Given our experience in the nuclear industry, and our reputation for engineering ingenuity, we are a good fit for the project&rsquo;s small but crucial access challenge.<br \/>\nThe feeder tubes in the first reactor were successfully removed on time, on budget, and most importantly, safely. Additionally, the design of the feeder platform was such that it could be easily dismantled and reassembled at the next reactor to do the same job. OPG&rsquo;s Darlington Refurbishment project, which began in October 2016 and involves the refurbishing of all four units, is scheduled for completion in 2026. Ontario Power Generation&rsquo;s (OPG) Darlington Nuclear Generating Station is one of the most the best-performing nuclear stations in the world.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Conference Board of Canada, the nuclear power station&rsquo;s continued operation to 2055 will take the equivalent of two million cars off the road and will generate a total of $89.9 billion in economic benefits.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/groupeagf.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Ligne_bleue_separation_version_e-2228.jpg\" style=\"height:67px; width:400px\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>AGF Access Group Inc., con sede en Montreal, ha sido seleccionada para proporcionar una soluci&oacute;n de acceso modular fabricada por su marca Winsafe, para el proyecto de energ&iacute;a limpia m&aacute;s grande de Canad&aacute;: la Central Nuclear de Darlington en el sur de Ontario de Ontario Power Generation (OPG), un proyecto conjunto de renovaci&oacute;n dirigido por SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. y Aecon Group Inc.<\/p>\n<p>Parte de la renovaci&oacute;n de la Central Nuclear Darlington requiere que se retiren y reemplacen 960&nbsp;tubos de alimentaci&oacute;n en cada uno de los n&uacute;cleos de los reactores y cada tubo pesa hasta 272&nbsp;kg (600 lb). Fabricaron una plataforma con un sistema modular de aluminio extruido ligero que los trabajadores pudieran ensamblar r&aacute;pida y f&aacute;cilmente.<\/p>\n<p>Nunca rechazamos proyectos, pero cuando vimos por primera vez los detalles de la renovaci&oacute;n de Darlington, pensamos que se trataba de una solicitud desafiante. Aunque la porci&oacute;n de acceso era solamente una peque&ntilde;a parte del acertijo, el proyecto presentaba necesidades inusuales y el equipo de acceso tradicional no iba a ser la respuesta.<\/p>\n<p>Tradicionalmente, para que el acceso a este tipo de trabajo sea posible, los obreros sueldan plataformas de acero al interior de la c&aacute;mara del reactor y despu&eacute;s la retiran; sin embargo, este m&eacute;todo era problem&aacute;tico en este ambiente con un espacio y acceso limitado. Dentro de la c&aacute;mara del reactor, el espacio extremadamente restringido les dejaba poco espacio a los trabajadores, quienes portan un equipo de protecci&oacute;n voluminoso, para poder construir y retirar eficientemente una plataforma de trabajo de gran capacidad para acceder a la matriz de cuatro lados de los tubos de alimentaci&oacute;n.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Mantener a los trabajadores seguros era nuestra principal consideraci&oacute;n. Tambi&eacute;n necesit&aacute;bamos asegurarnos de minimizar la exposici&oacute;n a la dosis de radiaci&oacute;n lo m&aacute;s posible&rdquo;, comenta Emmanuel Piec, Gerente General, Winsafe. &ldquo;Necesit&aacute;bamos un dise&ntilde;o que les permitiera montar r&aacute;pidamente la plataforma de alimentaci&oacute;n sin batallar con tuercas y tornillos con sus guantes de protecci&oacute;n. Al hacer la plataforma modular y casi sin necesidad de herramientas, pueden colocarla en un espacio ajustado r&aacute;pidamente y de manera segura.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Las dos plataformas, cada una compuesta de dos mitades rectangulares independientes que med&iacute;an aproximadamente 9 m (30 ft) de largo y 6&nbsp;m (20&nbsp;ft) de ancho, proporcionan acceso al frente del reactor de dos lados. Cada plataforma tiene una capacidad de 2268&nbsp;kg (5000&nbsp;lb) para soportar a varios trabajadores con sus herramientas mientras maniobran y realizan el montaje; es la ajustada y rigurosa resistencia para trabajar con los pesados tubos de alimentaci&oacute;n.<\/p>\n<p>La estructura principal de la plataforma, suspendida a partir de una serie de ganchos para barras de acero fijos y reubicables, necesitaba entrar en un &aacute;rea de solamente 23&nbsp;cm (9&nbsp;in) de profundidad, incluyendo la deflexi&oacute;n pico con una carga m&aacute;xima. Se necesitaban maximizar los tramos entre los ganchos de la plataforma para minimizar el movimiento inminente de los largos tubos de alimentaci&oacute;n a lo largo de la superficie de la plataforma de trabajo. Desde la plataforma, los trabajadores pod&iacute;an remover y reemplazar cada uno de los tubos utilizando los entrepisos existentes de la estaci&oacute;n para subirse y bajarse de la plataforma y temporalmente incrementar plataformas conforme se necesitara para alcanzar los tubos m&aacute;s elevados. Los tubos de alimentaci&oacute;n y otros materiales fueron llevados al &aacute;rea de trabajo por medio de una caja ubicada entre las dos mitades correspondientes de la plataforma.<\/p>\n<p>Las restricciones de espacio para este trabajo eran extremadamente desafiantes, pero elaboramos una soluci&oacute;n que funcion&oacute;, y funcion&oacute; muy bien. Dada nuestra experiencia en la industria nuclear y nuestra reputaci&oacute;n por nuestra inventiva en ingenier&iacute;a, estamos calificados para el peque&ntilde;o pero crucial desaf&iacute;o de acceso del proyecto.<\/p>\n<p>Los tubos de alimentaci&oacute;n del primer reactor se retiraron en el plazo establecido, respetando el presupuesto y, lo m&aacute;s importante, de manera segura. Asimismo, el dise&ntilde;o de la plataforma de alimentaci&oacute;n pod&iacute;a desmantelarse y montarse f&aacute;cilmente en el siguiente reactor para realizar el mismo trabajo.<\/p>\n<p>La finalizaci&oacute;n del proyecto de renovaci&oacute;n de la Central Nuclear de Darlington de OPG, el cual inici&oacute; en octubre de 2016 e implica la renovaci&oacute;n de las cuatro unidades, est&aacute; programada para el 2026. Esta es una de las centrales nucleares con mejor desempe&ntilde;o del mundo.
