On the day of our visit, all of the walls were lying flat and were in the process of being prepared, so I didn’t have a chance to see the procedure first hand.

Here are the steps in tilt-up construction:

– First, there must be a flat work surface such as a concrete slab that could later serve as a school playground.

– A non-adhesive chemical product is applied to the top surface of the temporary slab so that the permanent concrete panels can then be easily removed.

– Forms are made only for the lateral thickness of the panels and openings. Obviously, there is no need for bottom or top forms.

– Each opening and element that is cast, including the lifting hooks, must be coordinated and detailed to perfection.

– Once the concrete has set, each panel is lifted to its permanent location.

– Most of the wall panels for these projects are 400 mm thick, including an interior layer of rebar-reinforced concrete with 15M to 25M rebar, a layer of insulation between the two and another layer of reinforced concrete (WWM or Fibre).

– Various embossed shapes or paint can be used on the exposed surfaces. For example, for a school project, children’s handprints were used.

Fascinating facts about the Tilt-up technique:

– Tilt-up is a method in which concrete wall panels are poured on site and lifted into position.

– Tilt-up was first mentioned in a quotation from Thomas Edison in 1903: “Tilt-up construction eliminates the costly and cumbersome practice of building two wooden walls to obtain a single concrete wall.

– In 1908, Thomas Edison created Union, New Jersey, a village consisting entirely of tilt-up concrete houses that are still standing today.

– The most efficient tilt-up projects are two-storey walls.

– Tilt-up is becoming increasingly popular for building schools and institutional projects in Ontario.

– Tilt-Wall is an established tilt-up contractor that has worked with AGF Rebar since 2006.

– Our first tilt-up construction project was Building B at Humber College with Tilt-Wall, which won a Concrete prize in 2009.

Here are some photos from the site.

Kudos to the entire team!

I was recently invited to a half-day seminar presented by Tilt Wall, a company that […]

[217,221

post-46194","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-general-interest","category-projects
["GET
