The Carleton University Nicol Building is the vision of the Nicol Family and in essence the late Wes Nicol*<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n

The Nicol Building is the home of the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University. This project for AGF Ottawa involved approximately 1535MT of reinforcing steel which is not unusual in our business.  What is unusual, and a first for our AGF Team in Ottawa, is our involvement in the installation of “BubbleDeck<\/strong>“.  As BubbleDeck was new to us, determining how to price the installation was the first challenge. The best solution was decided together with the General Contractor.  <\/p>\n

BubbleDeck<\/em>, simply put, is the patented integration technique of linking air, steel, and concrete in a two-way structural slab.  Hollow plastic balls are inserted into the slab and held in place by reinforcing steel. BubbleDeck makes for faster construction as there is virtually no formwork, no downturn beams or drop heads and fast coverage capacity.  BubbleDeck is LEED Compliant.  1kg of recycled plastic replaces 100kg of concrete.  A total of 11,300 bubbles were used, displacing nearly 163 tonnes of concrete.  <\/p>\n

The shape of the Nicol Building is quite unique which put our production department to the test with the need to fabricate multiple layers of huge radius bars, a three person job.  Detailing faced the challenge of designing on the fly as detailing could only start after the BubbleDeck was installed and the site would forward the information to them in order to adjusted the layout and design of the rebar.  Detailing had to react quickly to changes along the way.<\/p>\n

AGF Ottawa delivered this project on time and on budget.  Thank you to all who worked on this site and congratulations on a job well done.<\/p>\n

Edificio Nicol de la Universidad Carleton<\/strong><\/p>\n

El edificio Nicol de la Universidad Carleton es la expresión de la visión de la familia Nicol y, principalmente, del difunto Wes Nicol*. Este edificio alberga la “Sprott School of Business” de la Universidad Carleton.<\/p>\n

\nPara AGF Steel en Ottawa, este proyecto constaba de aproximadamente 1535 t de acero de refuerzo, lo cual no es inusual en nuestro sector. Lo que es inusual, y es una primicia para nuestro equipo local, es nuestra participación en la instalación del sistema “BubbleDeck”.<\/strong>
\nComo este procedimiento era algo nuevo para nosotros, ¡determinar el precio de instalación fue nuestro primer desafío! Decidimos con el empresario general efectuar la instalación en una base temporal y material que nos benefició a los dos.<\/p>\n

En resumen, “BubbleDeck” es una técnica patentada de integración de aire, acero y cemento en una losa estructural en dos niveles. Se introducen esferas de plástico huecas en la losa, las cuales se mantienen en su lugar por medio de acero de refuerzo.
\nEste sistema permite una construcción más rápida, ya que prácticamente no hay que hacer encofrado, ni colocar vigas y tiene una capacidad de recubrimiento rápido. “BubbleDeck” cumple con las normas LEED: 1 kg de plástico reciclado reemplaza 100 kg de cemento. En total, se utilizaron 11 300 esferas, reemplazando casi 163 t de cemento.<\/p>\n

La forma del edificio Nicol es única, lo que ha puesto a prueba a nuestro departamento de producción debido a la necesidad de fabricar varias capas de grandes barras radiales. La concepción sobre la marcha fue un desafío, ya que el detallado podía comenzar solamente después de la instalación del BubbleDeck. Las informaciones de la obra se le volvían a llevar a los detallistas para ajustar la disposición y el tipo de barras de refuerzo. Nuestro equipo de detallistas tenía que reaccionar rápidamente ante los cambios durante el proceso.<\/p>\n

AGF Ottawa realizó este proyecto en los plazos previstos y respetando el presupuesto. Gracias a todos los que trabajaron para lograr el éxito de esta obra y ¡felicidades por este trabajo bien hecho!<\/p>\n
