If so, what are we doing in terms of research and development to stay competitive within the industry and market?

You’re right, there are different threats, which to lesser degrees, can affect the future of the rebar specialty as we know it now.

First, the increasingly common use of stainless steel, galvanized steel, fiberglass, etc. This is not a threat since we are already at the forefront of all these methods and often their prohibitive cost will prevent very wide use.

Second, the development of high-performance concrete may also reduce somewhat the quantities of steel required, but certainly not completely eliminate its use; therefore, a relatively small negative impact.

The main factor in the future that will impact the quantities of steel used in construction is the risk of replacing reinforced concrete with eco-responsible materials. Although reinforcing steel is a recycled material, concrete is a problem. This is why there is currently a lot of research on “low carbon” or “no carbon” cements.

It is for all these reasons that AGF has set up a technology watch post (Katherina Beck is our expert). We are participating with the Université de Moncton in new studies on the use of fiberglass. Basically, we stay abreast of global trends and we fully intend to stay competitive.

Thanks to Katherina Beck – Director, Business Intelligence and Technology Watch, for preparing this succinct answer to this very relevant question.

Each month, The Network readers can submit their questions about the history, projects, community involvement, challenges or […]

[217

post-47828","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-general-interest
["GET
