Is this the future of the industry? Is it already in use at AGF?

Fibreglass reinforcement does indeed have definite advantages such as those listed above.

To this, we could also add its very high mechanical resistance! But its main advantage is resistance to corrosion, which alone is reason enough to encourage studies into its use in concrete structures. In fact, corrosion of rebar has been identified as the main cause of structural deterioration in North America! This is no exaggeration.

However, there are currently a few reasons that stand in the way of its more widespread use. One of them is the lack of data on its durability, especially in alkaline environments. Some full-scale tests are underway, notably on the Jacques Cartier Bridge where AGF has installed a small section of fibreglass-reinforced slab. But to date, project engineers are still reluctant to use this product.

There is also a more logistical reason, which has to do with its production and manufacturing.

Fibreglass bars cannot be cold bent. Even hot bending is a challenge because it can only be done under certain conditions. In fact, most bends must be “molded” beforehand. This process does not allow the lengths to be adjusted to the part and therefore requires precise fabrication several weeks in advance. This is a major hurdle in the construction world, where speed and flexibility of execution are two essential qualities.

But since the future is all about change and evolution, it will undoubtedly lead us to new operational solutions and new materials. And AGF will be at the forefront of these changes! In fact, we are participating in a study by the University of Moncton in New Brunswick on the development of fibreglass rods.

Thanks to Patrick Farley (VP Major Projects, Risk Management and Contract) for his help and expertise on this topic.

Each month, The Network readers can submit their questions about the history, projects, community involvement, challenges or any […]

[233

post-47942","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-innovation-2
["GET
