From its humble beginnings, AGF has grown into a successful family business that has conquered the world of rebar.

Let’s take a look back at AGF’s history, from its founding in Montreal’s Lafontaine Park to its international expansion.

— From Valérie Lesage’s forthcoming book “Reinforcing the future since 1948”

1948: Beginnings

It all began in 1948 in Montreal’s Lafontaine Park, when Laurent Gendron gathered his team for the first time, unaware that this small gathering would mark the beginning of an amazing journey. Thus was born Acier Gendron, the family business that would later become AGF.

Laurent Gendron, a young engineering graduate, had a bold vision: to make reinforcing steel his specialty, something that didn’t exist anywhere else in Canada. With the help of a loan from his Polytechnique professor, he launched Acier Gendron the day after he graduated.

Acier Gendron’s beginnings were humble. Every morning, employees would gather in Lafontaine Park, where Laurent would hand out their day’s assignments before driving them to job sites, sometimes as far away as Ottawa. Contracts soon poured in, and the company moved into the basement of the family home, with Laurent’s wife as bookkeeper.

The 1960s: the start of expansion

In the 1960s, demand for rebar exploded with the building of iconic Montreal projects such as Expo 67, the metro and Place des Arts. Acier Gendron opened its first rebar plant in the Longueuil industrial park in 1968, marking a major step in its expansion.

The difficult 1980s

In the 1980s, an underestimated contract combined with an economic recession jeopardized the company’s survival. Serge, Laurent Gendron’s son, made a bold decision: he bought out his father’s business partner and became his partner in the struggle to stay afloat. Despite high interest rates and rising unemployment, Serge Gendron and his team of dedicated employees fought to get the company back on a solid footing.

The 1990s: Expanding into international markets

In the 1990s, the construction industry was hit by another recession, but AGF refused to be defeated. The company turned to international markets, forming strategic partnerships and developing high-level expertise. In 1999, AGF acquired its main competitor in Quebec, Fertek, thereby consolidating its position as leader in the rebar industry. Since then, it has never stopped expanding.

You know the rest of the story!

Today, AGF employs 2,400 people in 27 business units in nine countries! “Who could have foreseen on that May morning in 1948, when Laurent Gendron—my father—gathered his small team for the first time in Montreal’s Lafontaine Park, that this would be the start of an amazing journey that has continued for 75 years?” – Serge Gendron.

AGF got its start 75 years ago.
