\nThese general-interest capsules will feature best practices in health and safety in our industry. 
\nToday, the focus is on working at height and lifting.<\/p>\n

The situation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In November 2022, an employee of a construction company fell 6 meters to his death.
\nAt the time of the fall, he was lowering a steel component through an access shaft into the basement of a building, using a lifting platform. The steel component, resting on the platform’s railings, moved without the worker’s knowledge, throwing him off the platform.<\/p>\n

The causes<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Working at height involves a number of high-risk situations. 
\nIn this case, coordination and supervision of the work method used to enter parts and equipment through the shaft leading to the basement were deficient.<\/p>\n

Immediate action<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The use of platforms to lower equipment should be prohibited. 
\nNote: It is sometimes inadvisable or forbidden to use a lifting platform for this type of task. <\/p>\n

Before using it, make sure you are authorized to do so, and that you follow the steps indicated in the platform’s instruction manual. Also, never place materials on the guardrails, and distribute the load correctly, without exceeding the authorized limit.<\/p>\n

The solutions<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The lifting method must be signed and sealed by an engineer or a worker trained in the following method: <\/p>\n

    \n
  • An area must be marked out and secured near the opening giving access to the shafts. <\/li>\n
  • Hoists must be used and installed in predetermined locations. <\/li>\n
  • Fall protection must be used by workers approaching the opening.<\/li>\n
  • An equipment reception area must be marked out on the ground. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    El trabajo en las alturas<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    El trabajo en las alturas incluye varias situaciones de riesgo como por ejemplo las caídas. En los casos más graves, pueden conducir a una muerte. Por lo tanto, cada uno debe mostrar un rigor particular por su seguridad y la de sus colegas.<\/p>\n

    Para ello, la mejor práctica consiste en asegurarse de que la coordinación y la supervisión del método de trabajo se ajustan al proyecto.<\/p>\n

    El izado<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    El método de izado debe ser aprobado con la firma y el sello de un ingeniero o de un trabajador capacitado según el siguiente método:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Deberá delimitarse una zona segura cerca de la abertura de acceso a los pozos.<\/li>\n
    • Se utilizarán y colocarán chigres en lugares predeterminados.<\/li>\n
    • Los trabajadores que tengan que acercarse a la abertura deberán utilizar protecciones contra caídas.<\/li>\n
    • Deberá delimitarse en tierra una zona de recepción de material.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
