This large-scale project will provide BC Ferries with modern, efficient and sustainable facilities for years to come.

AGF Rebar’s role

The AGF Rebar team in Port Coquitlam, B.C., was tasked with the fabrication, delivery and installation of rebar, primarily focused on the new machine shop. Work began in January 2025 and is expected to be completed by December 2025.

“For me, this project was a reminder that construction is never just about following drawings. It’s about adapting, problem-solving and working together to make things happen,” says Pouya Abbasi, Project Manager at AGF.

Managing the unexpected with flexibility and collaboration

As with any major project, adjustments were required: modified pour joints, redesigned pedestals, and added underground conduits. These changes required regular communication with Bird Construction to minimize impacts on the schedule. The AGF team demonstrated proactivity by actively participating in coordination meetings and proposing practical adjustments to keep the project moving.

“Whenever a change occurred, we were able to provide the required rebar and propose concrete solutions to maintain progress,” notes Pouya.

“Beyond rebar and concrete, it’s the trust-based relationships that make the difference. Our teams and Bird’s worked toward a shared goal, which allowed us to move forward efficiently despite the unexpected challenges,” adds Tony Hernandez, General Manager, AGF Rebar Port Coquitlam.

An unexpected story on site

During the fourth slab-on-grade pour, an unexpected event temporarily delayed work: a bird chose to build its nest directly on the rebar cages. Out of respect for local environmental considerations, work was paused until the eggs hatched. This small pause is a reminder that, even on the most technical projects, nature sometimes sets its own pace.

Well-deserved recognition

Beyond the technical aspects, the dedication and vigilance of the placing crew stood out. Their rigorous work ensured consistent quality while keeping safety at the forefront. Bird Construction recognized their efforts by awarding them the Bird Monthly Safety Award.

“I was particularly impressed by how our placing crew handled the multiple changes. They didn’t just ‘do the work’; they took ownership of each task, communicated challenges clearly and always prioritized safety. Seeing them receive this recognition was a proud moment, not just for them, but for all of us at AGF Rebar Port Coquitlam,” says Pouya.

Building more than infrastructure

For AGF, this project illustrates the value of a strong partnership between all stakeholders.

“One of the highlights for me was meeting Bird Construction’s Project Manager, at the Birdex event. Our conversation was warm and genuine, and hearing directly from him how satisfied they were with our work made all the effort even more meaningful. Moments like that remind me why I enjoy being part of projects like this: it’s not just about rebar and concrete, but about building trust and leaving a positive impression,” explains Pouya.

This project is a reminder that the essence of our work is not only about building infrastructure but also about creating lasting, meaningful partnerships.

A special thank you to Nevan Desmond, James Shannon, Cody Pearson and Andrea Holiday for their invaluable contribution to this project.

The redevelopment of BC Ferries’ Fleet Maintenance Unit (FMU) in Richmond, B.C., led by Bird […]

[221

post-66507","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-projects
["GET
