But as the day progresses, fatigue and routine set in… and that’s when safety is truly tested.

“The end of a shift is a critical moment where our safety culture comes into play, says Kamran Ahmad, Health and Safety Manager – Ontario & Western Canada. Finishing well means protecting others as much as yourself.”

Why the end of shift is critical

Statistics show that most incidents occur during the last hour of work. Fatigue slows reflexes and decreases focus. The desire to “just finish” can lead to shortcuts: skipping a check, rushing cleanup or leaving a task incomplete.

“It’s not about bad intentions, Kamran explains. It’s human, but we can learn to recognize these moments and stay vigilant until the very end.”

Hidden risks

On construction sites and in shops, end-of-shift hazards are often simple: tools left out, unsecured materials or insufficient communication between shifts. A single oversight can create an incident for the next team.

“That’s why we emphasize proper handovers, Kamran adds. Taking two minutes to follow up or complete a checklist can prevent an accident. Communication saves both time and people.”

At one of our shops, an employee was about to leave without properly securing a load of rebar. A younger colleague simply asked, “Is it safe to leave it like that?”

That question changed everything. The employee took an extra minute to check his work and secure the load properly.
