Approaching the generation gap with an open mind

I have been in the workforce since the 1980s (some of you weren’t even born then) and I’ve worked at AGF since 2001—15 years of loyal service. AGF isn’t really tattooed on my heart, but it might as well be.

In my many years in the workforce, I’ve worked alongside people of different origins, religions and educational backgrounds from a wide array of communities, not to mention different generations.

Whether we belong to the silent generation, the boomers, Gen X or Y, we have to get along with our despite our generational differences. There are so many of them, you’ll say. Indeed there are! But we can learn from them. Our values and our aspirations converge at the same point: happiness.

Here are some of the traits of each generation with regard to work:

Intergenerational cohabitation calls for the greatest respect.  Regardless of our age and our position, this respect must be mutual.

The younger generation should view older colleagues as “coaches” and take advantage of their expertise. A way of doing things may appear obsolete to younger colleagues, but they should try to understand the wherefores and the whys before trying to change everything.

As a result, elders who played a major role in developing a company need to keep an open mind when it comes to changes made by younger employees to ensure the company’s continued growth and sustainability.

Each generation tends to be critical of the preceding and/or succeeding generation, and yet its predecessors raised the next generation, who will build the future.

“Handwriting came before the typewriter, which came before the computer.”

We need to keep an open mind, share our expertise and, above all, listen. Remember that we were once the youngsters and that today’s recruits are tomorrow’s veterans.

Accepting, respecting and learning from our differences: it’s a worthwhile challenge!

Vivir el relevo con el espíritu abierto

Estoy en el mercado de trabajo desde la década de los ochenta (algunos de ustedes ni siquiera habían nacido) y desde el 2001 trabajo en AGF; quince años de servicio leal. No tengo tatuado AGF sobre el corazón, pero es como si lo tuviera.

Durante todos estos años en el mercado del trabajo he frecuentado gente de religiones múltiples, de orígenes diferentes, con una educación diversa, provenientes de medios muy variados; sin olvidar, de generaciones diferentes.

Ya sea que formemos parte de la generación silenciosa, de los baby-boomers, de la generación X o de la Y, debemos convivir con nuestras diferencias intergeneracionales. Me dirán que son numerosas. ¡Es cierto! Sin embargo, podemos aprender de ellas. Nuestros valores y aspiraciones coinciden en un mismo punto, la felicidad.

A continuación, verá algunos puntos que caracterizan cada una de las generaciones en cuanto al trabajo:

La convivencia intergeneracional debe hacerse con mucho respeto. Sin importar nuestra edad y nuestras funciones, el respeto debe ser mutuo.

El relevo debería considerar a los antiguos como “coaches” y aprovechar sus conocimientos expertos. El método de trabajo puede parecerles obsoleto a los nuevos; sin embargo, deben entender el porqué del cómo antes de quererlo cambiar todo.

Igualmente, los decanos que participaron enormemente en el desarrollo de una empresa necesitan mantener el espíritu abierto ante los cambios que trae el relevo para así asegurar la perpetuidad y la progresión de la compañía.

Las generaciones tienden a criticar la anterior o la siguiente a pesar de que la precedente hizo crecer a la siguiente, la cual hace crecer a la futura.

Debemos mantener el espíritu abierto, compartir nuestros conocimientos y sobre todo escuchar. No olvidemos que fuimos parte del relevo y que los novatos serán los veteranos de mañana.

Aceptar, respetar y aprender de nuestras diferencias, ¡he ahí un buen desafío!
