Progress on a major project: the Champlain bridge

In recent years, the federal and provincial governments have been investing in Quebec’s road network.  One of the major structures in this network is the Champlain bridge. Built in 1962, it has been deteriorating rapidly and is nearing the end of its useful life, which can no longer be extended without endangering users’ safety. For these reasons, and given the rapid increase in traffic on the bridge, it was decided to replace the structure. On November 27, 2015, AGF Steel signed an agreement with Signature on the Saint Lawrence Construction to supply and install rebar: 18,800 tonnes of 500W grade, including 4,500 tonnes of stainless steel. The project comprises the construction of a new Champlain bridge, 3,400 metres in length, the 470-metre-long Nuns’ Island bridge, widening of Highway 15 between Atwater and the new bridge, and improvements to the ramps leading to highways 132 and 10 on the South Shore.

In addition to its elegant style and lofty lines, the new bridge differs from its predecessor in that it has a cable-stayed section in the main span that crosses the Seaway. A combination of concrete-steel structures and post-tensioning is used to achieve high performance. The consortium is confident in guaranteeing that the new structure will have a useful life of 125 years, well beyond the 60 years of the existing bridge. The new bridge will have 41 axes spaced at an average of 85 metres. The bridge deck at the central span is 44 metres above the water level, and the supporting tower is 170 metres in height.

Since the timeline for the project is very tight (three years), many of the components are being prefabricated by various subcontractors, including AGF, and then assembled on site. This allows for quick, high-quality execution, and the work is done in a better-controlled environment.

To meet the very high standards set forth in the contract, AGF put together a dedicated project team of four engineers, four draftsmen, and a documentation and quantity-control cell. An average of 50 workers are on the site installing steel with exceptional precision.

In addition, the Trois-Rivières plant is dedicated to producing the stainless steel in a yard that is completely separate from that for regular black steel.

As is the case with projects of this scope, it is important to be able to produce large volumes within a very short timeframe, but the ability to adjust swiftly to changes on site is a decisive factor.

One year after signing the contract, AGF Steel has already delivered more than 7,500 tonnes of steel, representing 750 trips to the site.

Seguimiento de un gran proyecto: el puente Champlain

Los gobiernos federal y provincial invierten desde hace varios años en la red de carreteras quebequense. Una de las estructuras principales de esta red, el puente Champlain, construido en 1962, ha mostrado un deterioro rápido y llega al final de su vida útil, la cual no podría prolongarse más sin poner en riesgo la seguridad de los usuarios. Es por estas razones, y teniendo en cuenta el rápido crecimiento del número de vehículos, que se planificó su reemplazo. El 27 de noviembre de 2015, Acier AGF firmó un acuerdo para suministrar y colocar el acero de refuerzo con Signature sur le St-Laurent Construction. EL acuerdo trata sobre 18 800 t de grado 500 W de los cuales 4 500 t son de acero inoxidable. El proyecto se compone de la construcción de un nuevo puente Champlain de una longitud de 3400 m, del puente de Île des Sœurs de 470 m de largo, de la ampliación de la autopista 15 entre Atwater y el nuevo puente, y de la mejora de las vías de acceso de la autopista 132 y de la 10 sobre la ribera sur.

Además de su estilo fino y elegante y de su línea altiva, el nuevo puente se distingue del antiguo por la presencia de una sección atirantada en el arco central que recubre la vía marítima. Una mezcla de estructuras de acero-concreto y postensado permiten lograr un desempeño elevado. Optimista, el consorcio garantiza el trabajo por una duración de vida útil de 125 años; mucho más que los 60 años del puente actual. El nuevo puente tendrá 41 ejes con una separación promedio de 85 metros. A la altura del arco central, el piso se eleva a 44 metros sobre el nivel del agua. La torre culmina a 170 m de altura.

Teniendo en cuenta la restricción de tiempo del proyecto (tres años), varias partes del trabajo son prefabricadas por varios subcontratistas, entre ellos AGF, para juntarlas más tarde en la obra. Esta técnica permite una ejecución rápida y de calidad; el trabajo es realizado en un ambiente mejor controlado.

Para cumplir con las normas elevadas establecidas en el contrato, AGF reunió un equipo de proyecto especialmente dedicado a ello. El equipo está compuesto de cuatro ingenieros, cuatro diseñadores y una célula de documentación y de seguimiento de cantidades. En promedio cincuenta trabajadores trabajan en la obra y colocan el acero con una precisión raramente exigida.

Además, la fábrica de Trois-Rivières está dedicada a la producción de acero inoxidable en un patio completamente aislado del acero negro usual.

Como en los proyectos de esta envergadura, la capacidad para producir volúmenes importantes en un lapso de tiempo muy corto es desde luego importante, pero la capacidad de ajustarse rápidamente a un cambio en la fecha de entrega es determinante.

Un año después de la firma, Acier AGF ha entregado más de 7500 t de acero en 750 viajes.
