Abbotsford overpass

The project

Since the summer of 2022, our AGF Rebar team in Port Coquitlam has been working on the Abbotsford Overpass project.

The work includes:

• a 1.3km widening of Highway 11 to extend the NEXUS lane from south of Vye Road to the US border,
• building a two-lane overpass on Vye Road, between Highway 11 and Riverside Road,
• and safety improvements to the 4th Avenue at-grade railway crossing west of Highway 11. 

A total of 206 metric tons of reinforcing steel will be installed.

The challenges

This project is very interesting because it faced several major challenges.

It was originally scheduled to begin in the fall of 2021 but it was delayed due to the discovery of native artifacts that were found during the relocation of power line poles for B.C Hydro. This caused a 6 month delay in the project.

In November of 2021, the Lower Mainland had an atmospheric river hit the south coast which caused several dikes to fail and cause heavy flooding of the job site which caused another 6 month delay, at this time the main structure is up and we still have the jump span and approach slabs to complete.

Work is expected to be completed in October 2023.

El proyecto

Desde el verano de 2022, nuestro equipo de AGF Rebar en Port Coquitlam trabaja en el proyecto del Viaducto Abbotsford.

La obra incluye:

• una expansión de 1.3 km de la autopista 11 para prolongar la vía NEXUS desde el sur de Vye Road, hasta la frontera estadounidense,
• la construcción de un viaducto de dos vías sobre Vye Road, entre la autopista 11 y Riverside Road,
• mejoras de seguridad en el cruce de la 4ª Avenida al oeste de la autopista 11.

En total, se instalarán 206 t de acero de refuerzo.

Los desafíos

Este proyecto es muy curioso, ya que se han enfrentado varios grandes desafíos. Primero, tenía que haber iniciado en el otoño de 2021, pero se retrasó debido al descubrimiento de objetos indígenas durante el desplazamiento de postes de líneas eléctricas para B.C. Hydro. El proyecto tuvo que posponerse seis meses para completar las excavaciones.

Más tarde, en noviembre de 2021, un río atmosférico impactó la costa oeste de Lower Mainland y provocó la ruptura de varias presas y una fuerte inundación en la obra; por esta razón, se pospuso seis meses más.

Después de estas peripecias, la obra reanudó y la finalización de los trabajos está prevista para octubre de 2023.
