AGF Rebar has the opportunity to collaborate with Pomerleau on a deeply meaningful project in downtown Halifax (Nova Scotia) : the construction of the new Wije’winen Centre, home of the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre.
The new 10,000 square meter Wije’winen Centre will be an Indigenous led cultural and community hub, designed by and for the community. Once completed, it will house a health centre, education department, outdoor ceremonial gathering spaces, a birthing unit, and more than 70 programs serving over 8,000 Indigenous people. It will be a place to gather, heal, learn, celebrate, and belong.
Building community, one rebar at a time
Our colleagues from Rendan Rebar in Halifax started to install rebar in July 2025 and will pursue it up to July 2026. A total of 375 metric tons of reinforcing steel is being fabricated and installed by them.
The construction of the center is expected to be completed in the summer of 2027.
A bit of history
Since 1973, this non-profit and charitable organization has been providing culture-focused programs, services, and essential support to urban Indigenous people and their families across Nova Scotia. Today, it stands as a pillar of connection.
Earlier this year, a powerful tree sprouting ceremony marked the symbolic beginning of construction near Citadel Hill. During the ceremony, both a birch and an ash tree were planted to represent the deep roots that hold people together and reflect the spirit of the future Wije’winen Centre. In Mi’kmaw, Wije’winen means “Come with us”, a beautiful invitation that captures the inclusive and community-driven nature of the project.
Being part of a project like this one that blends technical excellence with such deep social impact is a reminder of the role our industry can play in shaping stronger, more inclusive communities.
