Coxwell Bypass

AGF foremen are often working at height on buildings, bridges or overpasses, but this time, they’re going far underground.

As we announced last February, AGF Rebar is currently working on a major project in Toronto. Coxwell Bypass will capture, store and transport combined sewer overflows, a mixture of rainwater and wastewater, for treatment at the Ashbridges Bay treatment plant.

This job runs on a 5-day cycle. We do prefabrication for two days and for the other three days we install the panels by flying them in and locking each one into place. Each panel is just over two tons, so we have lots of extra ties on the pick points to ensure safety when flying them in the hole.

It takes us about 2 days to fly down all the panels. We have to fly them front and back, and lock them in place so we can unhook it safely and send the chains away for the next panels. On the third day, we finish installing over 300 couplers into the wall for future columns, walls and slabs. On the day we’re installing couplers, we get our next load of steel for the next lift. It’s just over fifty tons per lift. And then we rinse, and repeat!

The pictures below give you an idea of how impressive that job is and how far down we are. The first one is when we first started the hole and we are at the very bottom – at 58 meters deep. Roberto was fixing the chains on the man basket. The other picture is from the second hole we did and it shows almost the entire front and back done, minus a couple of panels.

Los trabajadores de AGF que elaboran las armaduras con frecuencia trabajan en las alturas, ya sea en edificios, puentes o viaductos, pero esta vez trabajan a gran profundidad bajo tierra.

Como lo anunciamos el pasado febrero, AGF Rebar trabaja actualmente en un importante proyecto en Toronto: el túnel Coxwell Bypass permitirá capturar, almacenar y transportar los desbordamientos del alcantarillado compuestos de una mezcla de agua de lluvia y de aguas residuales, para tratarlas en la estación de depuración de Ashbridges Bay.

Este trabajo se ejecuta en un ciclo de cinco días. Prefabricamos durante dos días y durante los otros tres instalamos los paneles suspendiéndolos y fijándolos cada uno en su lugar. Cada panel pesa un poco más de dos toneladas, por lo que colocamos numerosos sujetadores adicionales sobre los puntos de apoyo para garantizar que los bajamos de manera segura en el agujero.

Nos tomó aproximadamente dos días colocar todos los paneles. El tercer día, terminamos la instalación de más de 300 conectores en el muro para las futuras columnas, muros y losas. El día que instalamos los conectores, recibimos nuestra próxima carga de acero para el siguiente levantamiento. Se necesitan un poco más de cincuenta toneladas por levantamiento.

Las imágenes a continuación dan una idea del impresionante trabajo que se realiza y de la profundidad de la obra. La primera fotografía muestra cuando comenzamos el agujero y estamos hasta el fondo, a 58 metros de profundidad. Roberto fijaba las cadenas sobre la cesta de seguridad. La otra fotografía proviene de la segunda excavación que realizamos y muestra casi toda la parte anterior y posterior terminadas, a excepción de algunos paneles.
