I recently had the opportunity to revisit AGF Steel in Ottawa after we implemented a smart growth and business model optimization program in 2015. This systematic program enables a company to navigate changes to become a more customer/market centric business! It focuses on repositioning the business with a sharp vision of its value proposal and a laser focus for a more profitable growth machine. AGF Steel in Ottawa went from doing well to reaching new standards of excellence (42% growth over two years as well as significant increase in profitability). Christian, the general manager, Pierre Farah-Lajoie (VP Innovation at AGF Group) and I wanted to zoom in on the key drivers behind their amazing success story.
With the help of Christian and his team, we organized a full day to review the AGF Steel (Ottawa division) smart growth program’s performance over the past two years. We sat down with employees from all departments, reviewed the set-up and results of the system, visited onsite projects, as well as meeting with a few customers to clearly identify the value delivered by AGF Steel (Ottawa division).
I was very impressed! In a short time, the team has worked very hard to become a sort of business model for smart growth excellence! They are doing many things very well, but I must say that the one stand-out element for me was the passion and commitment of its employees! I felt like we had implemented a happiness program, not just a program for smart growth.
As game-changing market shifts unfold and challenge even the best companies, AGF Steel’s story is indeed very inspiring! Yes, companies can come out of a market shift stronger and more profitable. It is a great window of opportunity for a leadership team. But in the process of creating the next version of themselves, organizations should remember that the passion and commitment of their team members is not just the prerequisite for change but THE DIFFERENCE MAKER! Happiness might be the answer to transforming businesses after all.

Recientemente tuve la oportunidad de volver a visitar AGF Steel en Ottawa después de que en el 2015 implementamos un programa de crecimiento inteligente y de optimización del modelo de negocios. Este programa sistemático le permite a una empresa avanzar hacia cambios ¡que la convertirán en un negocio más centrado en el cliente y en el mercado! Se concentra en reposicionar a la empresa con una visión aguda de su propuesta de valor e implementar una máquina de crecimiento más productiva y precisa. AGF Steel en Ottawa pasó de tener éxito a alcanzar nuevos estándares de excelencia (crecimiento del 42% en dos años así como un incremento de rentabilidad importante). Christian, el Gerente General, el Sr. Pierre Farah-Lajoie (Vicepresidente de Innovación en Grupo AGF) y yo quisimos concentrarnos en los impulsores del éxito clave detrás de su increíble historia.
Con la ayuda de Christian Witt de su equipo, organizamos un día completo para revisar el desempeño del programa de crecimiento inteligente de AGF Steel durante los últimos dos años. Nos sentamos con los empleados de todos los departamentos, revisamos la configuración y los resultados del sistema implementado, visitamos los proyectos in situ y también nos reunimos con algunos clientes para identificar claramente el valor que ofrece AGF Steel.
¡Me impresioné bastante! En un periodo corto, AGF Steel ha trabajado arduamente para convertirse en una especie de legado empresarial ¡de la excelencia del crecimiento inteligente! Están haciendo muy bien muchas cosas, pero debo decir que lo que más destacó para mí ¡fueron la pasión y la entrega de los empleados! Siento que hemos implementado un programa de la felicidad y no uno de crecimiento inteligente…
Como los cambios del mercado afectan y desafían incluso a las mejores empresas, este legado deAGF Steel ¡es realmente inspirador! En efecto, las empresas salen de un cambio del mercado más fuertes y más rentables. Es una maravillosa ventana de oportunidades que un equipo de liderazgo puede enfrentar. Sin embargo, durante el recorrido para crear la siguiente versión de ellas mismas, las organizaciones deben recordar que la pasión y la entrega de los miembros del equipo no solamente es el prerrequisito para realizar los cambios ¡SINO LO QUE HACE LA DIFERENCIA! Después de todo, la felicidad podría ser la respuesta a las empresas que transforman.
