New Shifts

With the participation of Mikaël Kobryn et Stoyan Ivanov

In order to increase our production capacity, an additional shift has been introduced at AGF Rebar – London and AGF Steel Ottawa in recent weeks.

Mikael Kobryn -Operations Manager London – AGF Rebar, and Stoyan Ivanov – Quality Control & Production Assistant – AGF Steel, explain what this involves.

What are the organizational implications of adding a shift?

Mikael Kobryn (M.K.). : “Adding an evening shift calls for strong supervision. Indeed, the evening supervisor must be able to coordinate seamlessly with his day-shift supervisor eliminating all unnecessary delays with fabrication, in addition to making health and safety the top priority! 
The London shop is currently operating with six employees, but we’re in the process of recruiting. There are plans to increase the day and evening shifts to a total of  15-17 workers. »

Stoyan Ivanov (S.I)  “In Ottawa, the afternoon/evening shift started on June 22 with four operators.This shift has grown to 7 with the intent on having 2 to 3 shears work during the second shift.”

What challenges did you encounter?

M.K. : “In London, the main challenges are hiring and training new employees within a limited timeframe.  It is important that this be done quickly—and more importantly, safely.”

S.I : “ The big challenge in Ottawa resulted from the fact that the plant is outdoors. This meant dealing with lighting, insect control and weather. To make matters worse, we had a flood about a week ago. The rain was so intense that in the yard, between the shear lines, the water was above our knees. I’m so proud of how far we’ve come and the level of production we’ve achieved. We have hired a few more very junior staff members and with training and mentoring from the experienced staff, they will in time be part of the continued effort to increase production. Special mention goes to Michael Olstad, our afternoon shift shear operator, who went above and beyond the call of duty.”

Para aumentar nuestra capacidad de producción, desde hace varias semanas se implementó un turno de trabajo suplementario en AGF Rebar–London y AGF Steel, Ottawa. Mikael Kobryn y Stoyan Ivan nos explican lo que esto implica.

¿Cuáles son las implicaciones de este turno suplementario a nivel organizacional? 

Mikael Kobryn (M.K.): “La implementación de un equipo vespertino implica una supervisión estricta. En efecto, el supervisor de la tarde debe poder garantizar una coordinación infalible con el supervisor del equipo de la mañana, eliminando todo retraso inútil en la fabricación. ¡Debe igualmente darle prioridad a la salud y la seguridad!
La fábrica de London funciona actualmente con seis empleados, pero estamos actualmente contratando mano de obra. Naturalmente, está previsto aumentar los equipos de la mañana y la tarde para alcanzar un total de 17 trabajadores.”

Stoyan Ivanov (S.I).: “En Ottawa, el turno vespertino inició el 22 de junio con cuatro operadores. Hoy en día, somos siete en el equipo. El turno de trabajo inicia a las 14:00 y termina a las 23:00 (excepto los viernes, en los que el horario es de 13:00 a 21:00).”

¿Cuáles son los desafíos a los cuales se han enfrentado?

M.K: “En London, los desafíos principales radican en la contratación y en la capacitación de los empleados nuevos en un lapso limitado. Es importante que se haga rápidamente pero también, y sobre todo, en toda seguridad.”

S.I: “En Ottawa, el desafío mayor estaba relacionado con el hecho de que la fábrica está al aire libre. Por esta razón, fue necesario organizarse con la luz, la lucha contra los insectos y el clima. Encima de todo, hubo una inundación hace una semana. La lluvia fue tan intensa que, en el patio, entre las líneas de corte, el agua nos llegaba hasta las rodillas. Estoy extremadamente orgulloso del camino recorrido y del nivel de producción que hemos logrado. Contratamos personas muy jóvenes y, gracias a la capacitación y a la orientación ofrecida por personal experimentado, con el tiempo formarán parte del esfuerzo continuo por aumentar la producción. Deseo hacer una mención especial de Michael Olstad, nuestro operador de corte del equipo vespertino, quien realizó una labor extraordinaria.”
