Preparing for vacation

The sun is out, the weather is warm and you’re finally on vacation!

The feeling of the warm sun on your face as you walk out of the office to your car is pure bliss, knowing you’ll be free of the stress of work for the length of your vacation. You’ve earned it!

But wait – did you turn on your Out of Office notification?  Did you delegate that project to your colleague? Did you send that important email? All of these questions popping into your mind can put a damper on your new-found bliss. We’ve all been there.

So how can you have a stress-free vacation? I’m talking work-related stress—family and travel stress while on vacation is another subject completely! I have a few tips that may help alleviate this stress and any feelings of anxiety on the first day back in the office. 

1 – Let your colleagues and customers know about your vacation ahead of time and when you’ll be back in the office. This will allow sufficient time to clear up any outstanding items before you leave.  You can also advise them if you’ll be checking  your emails at any time.

2- Designate and train a backup for any tasks that cannot wait until your return.  Ensure they have the right information or tools to handle these requests. 

3- Before you go, update your manager or colleagues (if applicable) on the status of your projects so they’re in the loop in case they have to answer questions while you are away.

4- Clean up your work area.  Take the time to clear your desk of clutter and get organized; don’t forget to water your plants.  Coming back to a clean, tidy office means you’ll start back to work on a positive note. 

5- Change your voicemail to alert callers that you are not in the office and set the Out of Office notification in your email. Include your delegate’s contact information should there be something that requires immediate attention.

It can be hard not to think about work while you’re away, but this is your time to relax and recharge your batteries. Go ahead and enjoy your time with family and friends! We’ll see you when you get back. 

Preparándose para las vacaciones

Ya salió el sol, el clima está cálido ¡y usted está de vacaciones! ¡Finalmente! Esa sensación del cálido sol en su cara conforme sale de la oficina hacia su auto es una dicha sabiendo que no tendrá ningún estrés del trabajo durante sus vacaciones. ¡Se lo merece! Pero espere… ¿programó el mensaje de “Fuera de la oficina”?, ¿le delegó el proyecto a su colega?, ¿envió ese correo electrónico importante? Todas estas preguntas le vienen a la mente y arruinan esa dicha que acaba de sentir. Nos ha pasado a todos.

¿Cómo podemos pasar unas vacaciones sin estrés? Hablo de estrés relacionado con el trabajo. El estrés relacionado con la familia y los viajes ¡es un tema completamente diferente! Tengo algunos consejos que le pueden ayudar a aliviar este estrés y el posible sentimiento de ansiedad en su primer día de regreso a la oficina.

1. Infórmeles con anticipación a sus colegas y clientes que estará de vacaciones y cuándo estará de regreso en la oficina. Esto le proporcionará suficiente tiempo para preparar todos los pendientes antes de irse. También puede informarles si va a revisar sus correos electrónicos en algún momento.

2. Designe y capacite a alguien como respaldo para cualquier asunto urgente que no pueda esperar a su regreso. Asegúrese de que esta persona cuente con la información o herramientas adecuadas para completar estos asuntos.

3. Antes de irse, actualice a su gerente o colegas (si es necesario) sobre el estado de su trabajo y proyectos para que estén informados en caso de que tengan que responder alguna pregunta mientras usted no está.

4. Limpie su área de trabajo. Tome el tiempo de organizar y despejar su escritorio y no olvide ponerles agua a sus plantas. Regresar a una oficina organizada y limpia significa que regresará a trabajar a un lugar positivo.

5. Cambie el mensaje de su correo de voz para informarles a los que le llamen que no está en la oficina y programe el mensaje de “Fuera de la oficina” en su correo electrónico. Incluya la información de contacto de su delegado en caso de que algo requiera atención inmediata.

Ahora váyase y ¡disfrute sus vacaciones! Puede ser difícil no pensar en el trabajo mientras está fuera, pero es el momento de revitalizarse y recuperar energía. Vaya, diviértase y disfrute el tiempo con su familia y amigos, lo veremos cuando regrese.
