Rethinking Safety Culture

What does stress, coaching, communication, and family have to do with safety?

As part of the AGF Safety Week, we had the opportunity to attend a conference presented by Rob Ellis from MySafeWork. Rob Ellis is a father who lost his child to a preventable accident at his workplace at the age of 18. Since then, he has dedicated his life to educating people on how to prevent an injury, to inspire companies to establish a strong safety culture and encourage society on creating safe places to work in.

I was expecting a typical Health and Safety conversation but in reality, it was an eye-opening experience about life, culture, and the future.

Most of the time when we think about Health and Safety, the one thing that comes to our mind is a yellow hard hat. If that happens to you, then that might be a sign that you’re thinking like our grandparents.

In today’s world with the fast pace of life, the incredible evolution of technology and the amount of information available, we are more aware of our surroundings. The new generations, as Mr. Ellis proved, are more conscious about how coaching can help to understand the workplace, how communication is a key factor in our daily duties and how stress levels can affect our daily life.

We spend most of our time with our colleagues; if we can have effective COMMUNICATION with them, if we can introduce COACHING in our work culture to motive everybody to move in the direction of a safer and a healthier environment, then we can consistently reduce the STRESS and work together as a FAMILY.

It does not matter how busy we are or how tight is our schedule is, we must dedicate some time to talk, we must get together and speak about our concerns and priorities and, instead of hearing, we must listen to what everybody thinks.

We usually ask for our manager’s opinions or our most experienced peer’s advice but this time was different. This time we were able to hear the opinions of the younger people in our organization and I was surprised by their thoughts on these important aspects and the different points of view when it came to their priorities.

The culture is changing so, for your SAFETY, grab your PPE Kit and buckle up because we are moving faster than you think.

Reinterpretando la Cultura de Seguridad en el trabajo

Que tienen que ver stress, comunicación, entrenamiento y familia con seguridad en el trabajo?

Como parte de la Semana de Seguridad y prevención de AGF tuvimos la oportunidad de asistir a una conferencia impartida por el Sr. Rob Eliis de MySafeWork. Rob Ellis es un padre que perdió a su hijo de 18 años en un accidente de trabajo prevenible. Desde entonces ha dedicado su vida a la educación de las personas en prevencion de lesiones, inspirar a las compañías a establer una cultura de seguridad en el trabajo y a promover socialmente la importancia de tener lugares de trabajo mas seguros.

Yo esperaba una típica charla acerca de Salud y Seguridad pero en realidad fue mucho más que eso, fue una reveladora experiencia acerca de la vida, cultura del trabajo y del futuro.

Casi siempre cuando se piensa en Salud y Seguridad en el trabajo, lo primero que pensamos es en un Casco Amarillo. Si eso te sucede a ti pues puede ser que estes pensando en la misma forma que nuestros abuelos.

En el mundo de hoy, la rapidez con la vivimos, la increible evolucion de la tecnologia y la inmesa cantidad de informacion disponible, todos somos mucho mas concientes de lo que nos rodea

Pasamos la mayor parte de nuestro tiempo con nuestros colegas, si podemos tener una buena COMUNICACION con ellos, si podemos introducir ENTRENAMIENTO como parte de nuestra cutura de trabajo para motivar a todos a lograr un ambiente de trabajo mas saludable y seguro, entonces podremos reducir los niveles de stress y trabajar todos como una FAMILIA.

Independientemente de cuan ocupados estemos o cuan apretado sea nuestro dia, debemos dedicarle algun tiempo a hablar, a reunirnos y conversar acerca de nuestras preocupaciones y prioridades y, en lugar de oir, debemos escuchar lo que todo el mundo piensa.

Lo normal es preguntarle a nuestros Managers su opinión o pedir consejo a nuestros colegas mas experimentados, esta vez fue distinto.  Esta vez pudimos escuchar la opinión de las generaciones mas jóvenes en nuestra organización y me sorprendió lo que ellos piensan acerca de estos temas tan importantes y la diferencia de puntos de vistas en sus prioridades.

La cultura de trabajo esta cambiando asi que, por tu SEGURIDAD, toma tu Kit de Seguridad y amarrate el cinturón porque nos estamos moviendo mucho mas rápido de lo que piensas
